WSQ Advanced Certificate in the Early Years

The WSQ Advanced Certificate in Early Years (ACEY) course is designed to prepare early years educarers in the care, guidance and education of infants and toddlers (0-3 years).

Entry Requirement

At least Secondary 4 qualifications or completed 10 years of formal education, and

Attained an average Statement of Attainment (SOA) 5 in the Work Place Literacy (WPL) series, and

 Either a credit in GCE ‘O’ level English Language, OR a minimum band of 5.5 in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS – General Training) OR an average SOA of 5 for WPL (Written)



  1. Provide trainees with an overview of the history and theories behind early childhood care and education, as well as an understanding of the various domains and stages of development for children from birth to 3 years. These must be portrayed in the context of the work experiences of local educarers to help them reflect, assess and improve their current practices;
  2. Enable trainees to have a more in-depth understanding of the guiding principles, outcomes and sub-outcomes of the Early Years Development Framework (EYDF);
  3. Enable trainees to apply and implement the suggested practices stated in the EYDF in their work with young children and families;
  4. Equip trainees with necessary skills and practical knowledge to plan and implement programmes, curriculum and environments for the following age groups:
    • Infants (2 to 18 months)
    • Toddlers (Above 18 to 30 months)
    • Nursery children (Above 30 to 36 months)
  5. Equip trainees with the skills to engage in reflective practice;
  6. Equip trainees with relevant skills to work collaboratively with colleagues, parents and families, as well as key stakeholders in the community to support children’s care, learning and development.

  • ACEY 1 : Adopt the Early Years Development Framework (EYDF) for use in an early years setting from birth to three years

  • ACEY 3 : Child Development 2

Core Module 3 : Programme Planning and Pedagogy

  • ACEY 4 : Curriculum Planning and Strategies
  • ACEY 5 : Routine Care and Caregiving
  • ACEY 6 : Observation and Assessment
  • ACEY 7 : Classroom Management

Core Module 4 : The Early Years Environment

  • ACEY 8 : Designing Environments for Infants/Toddlers

Core Module 5 : Personal Growth & Professional Development

  • ACEY 9 : Personal Growth & Professional Development

Core Module 6 : Partnership with Families and the Community

  • ACEY 10 : Communicate with parents, family members, and significant others
  • ACEY 11 : Support and participate in planning of community engagement

Core Module 7 : Health, Safety and Well-being

  • ACEY 12 : Apply basic health, hygiene, safety and nutrition practices for infants/toddlers

Core Module 8 : Professional Placement

  • ACEY 13 : Theory to Practice

Mode of Instruction

Presentation of lessons will be done through facilitation process based on small group activities and group/individual class presentations.

Assessment Mode

A combination of assignments, examination, observations, demonstration, projects, individual presentations, group presentation, oral questioning and reflective journals, will be held.

Upon acceptance into the course, you will receive a Learner’s Guide.

Upon successful completion of coursework and practicum, and a minimum of 80% attendance, trainees will be awarded the WSQ Advanced Certificate in the Early Years (WSQ ACEY).
